Slovenia, Triglav National Park

1. Fusine Lakes in Italy close to the borders to Austria and Slovenia are in a spectacular setting. See Julian Alps. Take the motorway to Tarvisio, head for Slovenia/Kranska Gora and follow the signs to Fusine.

2. Kranjska Gora is the major ski area in Slovenia. It is easily reached from Italy by motorway to Tarvisio and further to Kranska Gora. There are no problems at the border, Slovenia is in the EU, and one can usually drive through without passport control.

3. Lake Bled is a gorgeous lake area (Marshal Tito's favorite). If possible, do not take the motorway West of Jesenice. The road to Bled is short, and you do not need a vignette for Slovenian motorways.

4. Triglav National Park is located in Slovenia in the Julian Alps.Spectacular mountain landscape with turquoise rivers and streams, and idyllic lakes.Calculate at least one morning or afternoon for a visit. A whole day, if you also drive to Bohinje and to Bled and/or around the park - highly recommended! Mount Triglav is the highest mountain in the Julian Alps (and in Slovenia). The whole park is wonderful with plenty of sights and 'actions', fx hiking, mountain climbing, paragliding, skiing etc. The road from Soča to Kranska Gora is an engineering masterpiece, and every turn of the road has new awesome views.

Green arrows point to the Soča river (Isonzo in Italian). Its source is West of Mount Triglav, and the drive along Soča valley is recognised as one of the most beautiful in Europe. Dark green arrows show the river from its origin to Tolmin. A green semicircle points to an especially beautiful section of the river. Here, fishing, rafting and kayak sailing abounds during Summer.

5. Lake Bohinj. A large lake beautifully situated in Triglav National Park. One can drive all the way along the Southern coast.
